'Glee' honours Whitney Houston by coincidence

'Glee' honours Whitney Houston by coincidence, ‘Glee’ version of ‘I Will Always Love You’ faces off against Jennifer Hudson and LeAnn Rimes, The hit show features a cover of 'I Will Always Love You,' even though the episode was filmed weeks ago. In the wake of Whitney Houston's untimely death, Hollywood is loving new renditions of her hit song "I Will Always Love You."

In an eerie moment of fortuitous timing, the "Glee" Valentine's Day episode last night featured Mercedes (Amber Riley) belting out Houston's famous song -- this, despite the fact that the episode completed filming on Jan. 31, nearly two weeks before Houston died. Mercedes broke into the romantic song after admitting she cheated on her boyfriend with on-again-off-again beau Sam (Chord Overstreet), whom she also jilted.

Watch Riley's full rendition of Houston's biggest hit:

Donning a satin red gown, Riley belted out a version of "I Will Always Love You" that sounded nearly identical to Houston's. Riley began with a similar a capella introduction as her predecessor and was later accompanied by the same familiar guitar, piano, and string instruments found in Houston's version. The only thing missing was the tenor saxophone solo.

Riley kept mum on her version of the song, despite praising Jennifer Hudson on Sunday after the Oscar winner sang "I Will Always Love You" as a tribute to Houston during the Grammy Awards. Hudson performed a deeper rendition of the track with only a piano to accompany her. Her voice echoed through the Staples Center as she made the song her own with new breaks and trills.

"That was absolutely beautiful Jennifer Hudson," Riley tweeted. "Absolutely beautiful! Made me smile. Great tribute."

Hudson, who got a standing ovation for her performance, tweeted that the tribute "was the greatest honor of my life."

But the night before Hudson took the stage, country singer LeAnn Rimes gave Houston a less publicized tribute at the Silver Legacy Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada. Hours after Houston had passed away, Rimes sang "I Will Always Love You," harking back to its original honky-tonk bent with only one guitar to accompany her. The 29-year-old country music star broke down in tears at the end, but was supported by cheers from the audience.

Dolly Parton originally wrote "I Will Always Love You" in 1973 for her business partner. It appeared as the second single on her album "Jolene" and topped the charts twice.
