David Beckham Shows Off Some Old Magic

David Beckham Shows Off Some Old Magic

David Beckham Shows Off Some Old Magic, David Beckham shows he can still blast it into the top corner, The soccer legend leaves television announcers in awe with this impressive, long distance shot. It's been an unpleasant start to the season for the LA Galaxy. On Saturday night they looked more like reigning MLS champions after a 3-1 win over Portland that was topped off by a beautiful goal from David Beckham.

Beckham was given too much time and far too much open space in the middle of the pitch to blast his shot into the top corner from distance. And the result seemed inevitable even though he was subbed out of the last match he played at halftime. But, as everyone should know by now, David Beckham has a habit of reminding people that he's still got it whenever they start to doubt him.

Trendsetter's high-tech locker room

Trendsetter's high-tech locker room

Trendsetter's high-tech locker room, Oregon Ducks' Amazing Locker Room, The Oregon football team's quarters have a lighting system that most other schools can't touch. The Oregon Ducks have 512 uniform combinations to entice recruits, and if that wasn't enough, their locker room can beat the other 119 in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

Bryan Bennett, a sophomore quarterback, takes fans inside the Ducks' locker room, and let's just say you'd be hard pressed to find a more impressive facility in the National Football League.

The football building is dedicated to legendary Oregon booster Phil Knight. Accordingly, the co-founder and chairman of Nike doesn't have your typical boring photo displayed. Knight, with a net worth of more than $14 billion, is showcased wearing a sweet pair of shades. And by sweet, we mean they look like something out of "Blade Runner" or "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure."

Beyond that, each individual player's locker includes the latest in technology, according to the official Oregon Ducks channel on YouTube. Locker stalls are metal, with vents above each player's equipment to prevent that nasty smell of body odor on shoulder pads from stinking up the facility.

In addition, the lighting system has three options: Lounge, Huddle and Game Day. The locker room has sensors that match the lighting in Autzen Stadium, so that on game day the players don't have to change their eyes to adjust to the light, they're ready to go.

Oregon's football team has a 34-6 record the past three years, including a Rose Bowl win.

The two-story facility also features lockers that are angled toward the middle of the room so that players can hear every word from coach Chip Kelly.

Yaris Based Defect Quickly, Physics paper used to beat traffic ticket, Physicist claims victory over traffic ticket with physics paper, University of California scientist Dmitri Krioukov says he's proved he didn't run a stop sign. A physicist at the University of California San Diego used his knowledge of measuring bodies in motion to show in court why he couldn't be guilty of a ticket for failing to halt at a stop sign. The argument, now a four-page paper delving into the differences between angular and linear motion, supposedly got the physicist out of a $400 ticket. If you want to use this excuse, you'll have to learn a little math -- and some powers of persuasion.

The paper by Dmitri Krioukov titled "The Proof of Innocence," notes in the abstract that it's "a way to fight your traffic tickets," and was "awarded a special prize of $400 that the author did not have to pay to the state of California." (It's also posted with a date of April 1, so downloader beware.) Krioukov claims he was approaching a stop sign in his Toyota Yaris when a police officer saw him roll through the intersection, apparently without stopping, and pulled him over. Case closed — except that Krioukov says he was able to show a confluence of events that only made it seem he hadn't stopped.

First, the officer was watching the stop sign saw Krioukov's car from the side, distorting his idea of how fast Krioukov was traveling before the stop. At the stop sign itself, Krioukov contended he had stopped — but the officer's view was briefly blocked by a passing car. When Krioukov started again, the officer's sense of Krioukov's speed made it seem he had never stopped at all.

Krioukov told PhysicsCentral that the case and his argument were real, but that he left a flaw in his work for others to find, and sure enough a few commenters found the Yaris-based defect quickly. Leave it to a physicist to create an explanation that ends with people doubting whether the problem explained actually existed at all.

People who think the Titanic is just a movie

People who think the Titanic is just a movie, Twitter Backlash for People Who Did Not Know Titanic was Real, Tweets expressing surprise that the tragedy actually happened flabbergasts the Web. The social news-sharing site Reddit has a knack for exposing people and situations. The latest topic of discussion to generate controversy is a series of tweets from people who did not know that the sinking of the Titanic was a real historical event. 100th Anniversary Titanic Memorial Cruise Sets Sail, A cruise will travel the exact route of the Titanic, stopping at the crash site for a memorial, and a Ryan Gosling themed egg hunt springs up in New York City.

Apparently, an entire generation of people associate "Titanic" with the Hollywood blockbuster starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Here is the disambiguation for you. The RMS Titanic sank April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg. The tragedy is considered one of the deadliest of peacetime maritime disasters. More than 1,500 people died.

"Titanic" the film was released December 19, 1997, and was an instant success. It became the highest-grossing film of all time for 12 years, until "Avatar" debuted in 2009.

For all the history buffs reading this, the next couple of sentences may be too painful to contemplate. A couple of the tweets from the uninformed read, "Nobody told me titanic was real? How am I just finding this out?" Another tweet read, "Guys, the Titanic was real! #mindblown."

Most people ware of the existence of the RMS Titanic are in disbelief. One such person tweeted, "The ignorance is astounding." Another person said he was "weeping for the future" at finding out that so many young people are unfamiliar with such a well-known fact.

Addis Cone Balls With UNC Squad

Addis Cone Balls With UNC Squad, College players wowed by 8-year-old, Eight-Year-Old Balls With UNC Squad, Members of North Carolina's hoops team play a game with fans, but young Addis Cone steals the show. Ask any resident of North Carolina draped in baby blue if they would like a chance to play hoops with their beloved Tar Heels, and almost all of them would put it on their bucket list. Many Carolinians got that wish yesterday as members of the Elite 8 squad played pick-up games with students and fans at the campus' Cobb Court.

While a few had moments of glory, and most were thoroughly dominated, one little man stole the show. Meet Addis Cone, eight-years-old, of Morris Grove Elementary.

Talk about rising to the occasion. Cone couldn't have been more composed or more deadly from range as he tumbled around and through the opposing defenses, which towered impossibly high over him. There seem to have been countless points when the mini Steve Nash couldn't even see around his teammates on defense. No matter, it seems nothing was fazing him Wednesday.

No word yet on whether head coach Roy Williams has made an offer, but Cone's closer to being on the Tar Heel coaching staff radar than he was last week.

Blake Griffin dunks in star defender's face

Blake Griffin dunks in star defender's face

Blake Griffin dunks in star defender's face, Blake Griffin dunked on Serge Ibaka very hard (VIDEO), Oklahoma City's Serge Ibaka may lead the NBA in blocks, but he's helpless to stop the L.A. Clippers star. Back in January, Blake Griffin dunked on Oklahoma City Thunder big man Kendrick Perkins with the force of a thousand hammers. It's one of the top highlights of the NBA season, right up there with the time Rajon Rondo invited Greg Stiemsma to go bowling. (They both got turkeys!)

As great as Griffin's dunk was, though, he didn't execute it on OKC's best shot-blocker — that would be Serge Ibaka, who's also the NBA's top shot-blocker by far at 3.55 per game and the owner of two double-digit block games this year (one highlight clip here). As if to make up for that hole in his resume, Griffin dunked all over Ibaka midway through the third quarter on Wednesday night, taking the pass from Chris Paul and throwing it in over the defender. Add one more name to Griffin's list of victims. (Pau Gasol, of course, was the most grisly incident.)

Then again, embarrassing moments like this one are part of Ibaka's job description — in February, he was on the business end of a similarly brutal Josh Smith dunk. Sometimes shot-blockers look silly. Chances are, though, that they'll return the favor soon enough.

'Top Gear' host names best car ever made

'Top Gear' host names best car ever made

'Top Gear' host names best car ever made, BMW: The Greatest Car Ever Made Says Top Gear’s Hammond, Popular TV host Richard Hammond says this pricey European brand is in a league by itself. If it was anybody else, you could probably just dismiss it as babel or a momentary lapse of judgement. But to hear from Richard Hammond, a guy who achieved global fame by sitting behind the wheel of some of the world's fastest and most exotic cars, is an entirely different matter.

To say nice things about pricey German cars is as common as cliches, but for the co-host of Top Gear to throw out ''best car ever made," that's cause to pull over and listen.

"To a degree you really could make a case for them being exactly that," Hammond says in the attached video, pointing to BMW's engineering pedigree and a reputation for quality that assures you their cars will "be here in ten years."

Hammond's revelation first came to light in a column he wrote for London's The Daily Mirror, in which he called the new 3-Series "three-mendous." In hilarious fashion, this critic turned fan actually berates himself for not being able to find faults, and even admits how much easier it is to be critical then complimentary.

All of this comes as the new 3-Series marks the 6th generation or platform update for a model that's nearly 40 years old. It also comes at a time when consumers appear to be in agreement with Hammond, as BMW just posted its best first-quarter sales ever, with a total of 425,000 more going to China than the U.S.

"Their cars are not about cutting edge, brand new technology, breaking new ground, pushing things further," Hammond says. "Their cars are about doing what's already known...and doing it extremely well."

Missing $109 Million Masterpiece Found

Missing $109 Million Masterpiece Found

Missing $109 Million Masterpiece Found, Serbia says finds Cezanne missing masterpiece worth $109m, A work nabbed at gunpoint in one of the world's biggest art heists has finally been recovered, police say. Police in Serbia believe they have recovered an Impressionist masterpiece by Paul Cezanne worth at least $109 million that was stolen at gunpoint in one of the world's biggest art heists four years ago, a police official said on Thursday.

"We believe the painting is Cezanne's Boy in a Red Waistcoat and three suspects were detained in connection with that," the official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters.

"Experts in Serbia and abroad are trying to ascertain whether the painting is an original. This painting is worth tens of millions of euros," the official added.

The canvas - Boy in a Red Waistcoat - was one of four paintings stolen from a Swiss art gallery in 2008 by a trio of masked robbers who burst in just before closing time and told staff to lay on the floor while they took what they wanted.
The paintings were reportedly worth an estimated $163 million at the time and the heist was the biggest art theft in Swiss history and one of the largest in the world. The Boy in a Red Waistcoat canvas was worth $110 million alone at the time.

The painting was stolen in 2008 from the Emil Georg Buehrle gallery in Zurich, a private collection founded by a World War Two arms dealer and entrepreneur. The gallery could not be reached for comment on Thursday.

Two of the stolen canvasses, one by Claude Monet and the other by Vincent Van Gogh, were recovered days later abandoned in a car, but the other two - the Cezanne and a painting by Edgar Degas, have been missing for the last four years.

Cezanne's Boy in a Red Waistcoat is thought to have been painted around 1888 and depicts a boy in traditional Italian dress donning a red waistcoat, a blue handkerchief and a blue belt. Three other versions of the painting are in museums in the United States.

Last October, the Serbian police recovered two paintings by Pablo Picasso - TĂȘte de Cheval (Horse's Head) and Verre et Pichet (Glass and Pitcher) - stolen in 2008 from a gallery in the Swiss town of Pfaeffikon, near Zurich.

The police official said law enforcement agencies from several countries had cooperated in the latest investigation that led to the apparent recovery of the Cezanne masterpiece.

Serbia's state prosecutor is expected to issue a statement or give a press briefing on the case later on Thursday.

Week's worth of dinners for just $50

Week's worth of dinners for just $50

Week's worth of dinners for just $50, Make 5 Dinner Recipes from One Bag of Groceries, It takes only one grocery bag full of ingredients to make these five dishes for your family.

Think you can make five whole meals from just one $50 bag of groceries?

I recently accepted Eating Well's "5 Dinners, 1 Bag" challenge. Their test kitchen team provided me with a grocery list and I hit the local D'Agostino's supermarket in New York to collect my ingredients, which included:

one bunch each of asparagus, chives, scallions and cilantro

one lemon

8 ounces snap peas
1 pound of sea scallops
1 pound of lean ground beef
12 ounces of pork chops or tenderloin
1 15-oz can of crushed tomatoes
1 14-oz can reduced-sodium beef broth
1 16-oz package whole-wheat spaghetti
1 14-oz box instant or quick-cooking brown rice
1 15-oz can kidney beans
1 16-oz box of whole wheat spaghetti
1 10-oz package frozen chopped spinach
1 8-oz block extra-sharp Cheddar cheese
1 4-oz block Fontina cheese
1 dozen eggs

1 lb ball whole-wheat pizza dough or 1 ready-made pizza crust

After ringing up my items, I quickly headed over to meet Jessie Price of Eating Well to see how to put my ingredients to work. Jessie gave me the following five easy and delicious recipes, one for every day of the work week. What do you think? My favorite is from Wednesday!

(Note: We assumed we'd have some basic ingredients already at home like cooking oil, spices like curry, salt and pepper, garlic, onions, sugar, vinegar, butter, and milk.)

Monday: Spring Pizza

Eating Well likes to advocate Meatless Mondays, so Jessie and I started by cooking up a Spring Pizza, using our minced garlic, cooking oil, about half of our fresh chives, as well as one cup of shredded Fontina cheese to top the dough. Asparagus was the star vegetable. We arranged the spears in a circular fashion, just like the sun's rays over the dough. If asparagus isn't your favorite, you can simply sub in another seasonal veggie to top your pie.

Makes: 5 servings
Active time: 25 minutes
Cost per serving: under $2

Tuesday: Curry Scallops with Cilantro Rice

Our next recipe stemmed from what the magazine likes to call "Sustainable Seafood Tuesday." For this, we took our scallops and coated them with curry from our spice rack, and sauteed them in a pan. We then added the scallops to three cups of cooked brown rice. We added cilantro, scallions, lemon juice and salt for added flavoring.

Makes: 4 servings
Active time: 25 minutes
Cost per serving: under $4.50

Wednesday: Cincinnati Chili

Cincinnati has a unique spin on chili, where locals like to serve it over spaghetti. Typically, it's made with just meat, but you can also add beans for fiber. This recipe uses ground beef, onion, spices from home, a can of tomatoes, a can of beef broth, kidney beans, and some of your leftover cilantro from Tuesday's curry dish. Cook your entire one-pound box of pasta, and reserve half of the cooked noodles for tomorrow night's meal.
Makes: 4 servings
Active time: 20 minutes
Cost per serving: under $3

Thursday: Stir Fry

For Thursday, we prepared a pork and snap pea stir-fry, which we also served over our leftover Pasta. For this, mix up a simple sauce of soy sauce, sugar, cornstarch, and rice vinegar. Then sautee your snap peas, adding pork, garlic, and your sauce mixture. Serve over your pasta.

Makes: 4 servings
Active time: 30 minutes
Cost per serving: under $2

Friday: Rice, Spinach and Cheddar Pie

For the last day of the work week, this recipe proved to be cinch, especially with leftover rice from earlier in the week. Saute some onions along with the thawed, rinsed spinach. In a bowl add your leftover rice, seasonings and crumbled cheddar cheese. Then transfer it all to a baking dish, pour an egg mixture over it and bake.

Makes: 6 servings
Active time: 15 minutes
Cost per serving: under $2

Plastic-eating mushrooms found in jungle

Plastic-eating mushrooms found in jungle

Plastic-eating mushrooms found in jungle, More Than Mere Magic Mushrooms, A Yale professor stumbles upon a fungus that could be an environmental miracle. This week we're talking about fungus two ways. One that can survive exclusively on polyurethane and another that can replace Styrofoam. Both polyurethane and styrofoam are not biodegradable, so without a solution, all the plastic bottles and old toys we throw out every year will be sitting in landfills for centuries.

Yes, you can recycle plastic, but that just means turning it into another product and recycling hasn't sufficiently slowed the production of new plastic.

According to a Yale study, globally we produced 245 million tons of plastic in 2006, compared to only 1.5 million tons in 1950.

One of the fungi we're looking at is called pestalotiopsis microspora. It was discovered by a group of Yale researchers on an expedition in Ecuador and can subsist on polyurethane alone in airless environments, like the bottom of a landfill.

The other comes from a couple of college friends who discovered that the sticky substance on the bottom of mushrooms called mycelium could be turned into a glue and when that glue is combined with corn husks and other food byproducts it takes on a form similar to Styrofoam. Their company, Ecovative wants used Styrofoam to become mulch, not waste.

A future with less plastic and more mulch, all thanks to fungus.
