HS girl's sweet prom plea to NBA player
HS girl's sweet prom plea to NBA player, Teen Georgetta Wuo asks Ricky Rubio to prom and rest of Timberwolves are on her side, A teenager in Minnesota really wants Timberwolves rookie Ricky Rubio to be her date. Professional athletes may not be taking up teenagers on their heartfelt efforts to woo them into face-to-face meetings, but apparently that isn't stopping more from trying.
After a failed effort to woo Jeremy Lin to New York (N.Y.) Stuyvesant High's commencement and valiant efforts to land prom dates with Lin and Tebow, the latest effort comes from Minnesota, where 18-year-old Champlin Park (Minn.) High senior Georgetta Wuo asked Ricky Rubio to escort her to her prom.
Yet, unlike the other attempts to land professional face time, Wuo's overture may actually work out, though not for the reasons one might think. That's because the teen's efforts are getting a big push from Rubio's teammates, who enthusiastically endorsed the idea to Twin Cities CBS affiliate WCCO.
To be more exact, All Star forward Kevin Love, fellow point guard J.J. Barea and Anthony Toliver all said Rubio should definitely go to the prom for a variety of reasons.
"There's no game that night," Love told WCCO. "If Ricky's in town, I think he should go."
Barea made another, possibly more persuasive point, saying that attending the prom would be a valuable American experience for Rubio, a quicksilver Spanish export who made a major impression on the NBA circuit before tearing an ACL, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
That injury itself provides even more reason for Rubio to go, if you ask Tolliver.
All of the pro-prom reaction from the Timberwolves shouldn't come as much of a surprise. The current Minnesota roster has been involved in plenty of funky, viral video efforts to boost fan support -- this trippy Darko Milicic/LMFAO mashup as dug up by Ball Don't Lie's Dan Devine, for instance -- and encouraging a teammate to meet up with a teenager at prom certainly fits with that theme.
Heck, Rubio's teammates might even be jealous that she didn't ask them, instead.
Will the Spanish point guard accept Wuo's advances? That remains to be seen, but with the encouragement of Rubio's teammates, he certainly won't be able to simply ignore the invitation as if it never happened.
