President Obama wanted on 'Idol'
President Obama wanted on 'Idol', Obama asked to sing on 'Idol', "American Idol" producer Nigel Lythgoe has reportedly invited President Obama to come on the show and sing a duet, Nigel Lythgoe wants Obama on 'American Idol.' What should the President sing?, Lythgoe was apparently blown away by the president's short rendition of a popular song. He reportedly sent the invite on Twitter and said he sounded much better than a current presidential candidate.
During a speech last Thursday at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, President Obama wowed the crowd with a brief rendition of soul legend Al Green’s hit, “Let’s Stay Together.” In response, American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe tweeted an invitation to the commander-in-chief:
@BarackObama we loved your vocal performance so much we’d love to invite you on to#AmericanIdol this Season for a duet with Al Green.
In keeping with the vein of asking the President to do ridiculous things, this seems to be a relatively solid idea. The nation’s second biggest O (after Oprah, obviously) would do wonders for the show’s falling ratings, and would help Obama reconnect with the average Joe Idol-lovin’ audience — who, let’s not forget, are familiar with the voting process.
When I spoke to Lythgoe last week, he told me that he couldn’t even think about which celebrities would appear on his other hit show, So You Think You Can Dance, saying, “At this moment in time, it’s very American Idol for me.” If only I had known at the time that his aspirations were a little less White Stripes, and a little more White House.
The scary part is, because of Idol’s larger-than-life nature and the fact that the show can get just about anyone it wants, I’m not sure if this is just a jocular tweet or something that we should actually prepare ourselves to see later this season. Nigel makes miracles, y’all.
Political PopWatcher pundits, sound off! Would you tune in to watch President Obama on Idol? What kind of song would you want to hear him tackle? Blues? Pop? Country? And no, “The Star-Spangled Banner” is not an option.
