Melanie Fiona wins two Grammy awards, Singer accepts Grammy in 'true Canadian fashion', Torontonian Melanie Fiona starts speech by politely introducing herself — and apologizing.Melanie Fiona, we are all fools for you. The 28-year-old R&B singer/songwriter from Toronto, Melanie Fiona, picked up her first two trophies during tonight's Grammy Awards for her sultry duet with Cee Lo Green, "Fool For You." She dominated in the categories of Best Traditional R&B Performance and Best R&B Song, accepting her awards in true Canadian fashion: by politely introducing herself and then apologizing for how long it took her to get to the podium.
Fiona began her first by admitting that winning for Best Traditional R&B Performance was a "dream come true" for her and closed by thanking the idol on everyone's mind that evening: Whitney Houston.
Said Fiona, "I would not be standing up here if it wasn't for [Whitney Houston]. God bless you and thank you so much."
But Fiona didn't have enough time to leave the stage before it was announced that she had also won the Grammy for Best R&B Song. The singer quickly returned to thank her co-writers, Cee Lo Green and Jack Splash.
Two days prior to her Grammy wins, Fiona performed at the "House of Canada: Grammy Event" at the House of Blues in West Hollywood and blew the crowd away. Before taking the stage, she told the crowd, "I would just love to bring a Grammy back to Canada. I love this record and it will be exciting to be there as a songwriter."
This is Fiona's first year of wins and third year being nominated at the Grammys. In 2010, she was nominated for her track "If It Kills Me," and in 2011 for "Wake Up! Everybody," her collaboration with John Legend, The Roots and Common. Fans will see her next at this year's Juno Awards, where her track, "Gone And Never Coming Back," is nominated R&B/Soul Recording Of The Year.
