Ellen fires back at anti-gay protest group
Ellen fires back at anti-gay protest group, VIDEO: Ellen DeGeneres responds to One Million Moms’ protest over JC Penney campaign,, DeGeneres reacts to calls for J.C. Penney to fire the talk show host as their spokesperson because she's gay. For Ellen DeGeneres, the overturning of Proposition 8 was not the only expression of equality she was celebrating Wednesday.
In a monologue at the beginning of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" today, the gay talk-show host was "happy" to announce that an appeals court in California had overturned Prop. 8, the law that bans gay marriage, on Tuesday. In the same breath, she thanked J.C. Penney for keeping her as its spokesperson despite the conservative group One Million Moms pressuring the clothing store to fire her for being gay.
"Normally I try not to pay attention to my haters," said the 54-year-old comedian, who is married to "Arrested Development" actress Portia de Rossi. "But this time I'd like to talk about it because my haters are my motivators."
Last week, J.C. Penney told Yahoo! Shine that it would not get rid of DeGeneres despite pressure from the conservative group because the company "stands behind its partnership with Ellen DeGeneres."
Today, DeGeneres said she was "proud and happy to say J.C. Penney stuck by their decision to make me their spokesperson," but still had a bone to pick with One Million Moms.
In response to the store's continued support of DeGeneres, One Million Moms posted a message on its website claiming J.C. Penney will "lose customers with traditional values." The talk show host read aloud the group's message in its entirety and proceeded to point out the number of commentators on the One Million Moms site who seemed to disagree with them.
"Here are the values I stand for," DeGeneres concluded. "I stand for honesty, equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way you want to be treated, and helping those in need. To me, those are traditional values."
